Ok so the majority of people clock on and clock off and basically go through the motions when they are at work, you can spot them a mile away the ones that hang around the kitchen or water cooler, the ones that spout on about reading a self improvement book but don’t take the action required!
All talk no action or Atna for short!
Then you meet Mike Philbin who makes Stonecare and Granite Counter Cleaning sound interesting, watching his videos you can see the passion come through as he speaks about getting the best results and delivering great service that leave a great impression with you, hence today I writing this 🙂
And getting my granite worktops cleaned on Friday!!
A while ago I picked up on the fact that properties in England and Wales were quickly valued by estate agents in 1991 after the failed poll tax scheme. They did this by driving down a road and ticking a box to say band A, B, C etc and became known as a second gear valuation as they never actually looked at the property just drove past at the time.
So a curious me decided to use the power of the internet and the freedom of some public information and see if my house was in the right valuation bracket.
By doing so I found out that 2 houses on the street were in a lower tax bracket than the my house and the rest of the houses on the street, what made it more interesting was one had a garage bolted on the side of the house when our house has no garage.
So with this information to hand I wrote a letter to the valuation office asking them for a review of my council tax band taking into account the various factors I had discovered.
A 2 page “automatic” response, sorry we feel your property is in the right band and cannot discuss why 2 properties are in a lower band and you have no right to appeal on this!
So I wrote to them again, where they confirmed that 42 properties on my street all the same but 3 are in a lower tax band! (Go figure that one) yet these properties are the same building size and two have garages where others don’t! So surely having a garage attached to the property should be a bonus
One wonders how these properties get to remain in a lower tax band than the other 41 houses
For my friends that know me well, I was brought up in the building trade and would be using real bricks and timber not the LEGO that my friends used to play with as a child, all though I left that game years ago and as my father says you are a “desk jockey” though I have not worn a suit in 10 years either!
From time to time people approach me and want me to project manager their house extensions as a favour, and all though I have not done one for 2 years I can never escape and I am lucky that my friends who have asked me to help sort out there new house extension have got a decent budget and idea’s on what they actually want to achieve so I am off sourcing kit, builders everything including these lovely kitchen sinks!
I have recently had problems with my heating system, no matter what I did I could not get any heat through my radiators. The wife kept on saying “The heatings broke” and to compound the problem I was reccomended a plumber who turned up tried to do a power flush and then left and never came back. I then got in touch with another firm who put chemical inhibitors in the system and said they would call me back to arrange a time to flush the radiators as they were blocked.
Time went by and no sign of any plumber so I turned away from friends reccomendations and searched the internet and what a mixed bag that was. several enquires were emailed off one late night in September
one reply “were short staffed due to holidays but if you need to do a power flush then can take the radiator off and flush it with a hosepipe” Now I know a bit out property and how things work and no a hosepipe is not really going to do the job and besides I am not a plumber and my heating knowledge is basic. And if I was going to do it myself I would not waste time sending enquiries off!! !
Another reply was from a PLC company who are pretending to be a local firm, really bad email reply with a crazy figure and wanting 50% paying before they turned up, really did not warm to that one.
The most amazing reply was from a local genuine guy called Barry Ayres, who runs a business that specialises in Power flushing stockport I had an email next morning asking for a bit more information which took me a while to reply, when I did he came back with a price and we agreed the work. He turned up on time and established that the heating pump was on it’s last legs so and reccomended that it should be replaced and then a power flush of the heating system and chemical inhibitor installed. which all came in much less than the others were trying to charge me for a simple power flush! Took him all day to complete the work but as it was a fixed price deal I was happy.
So thanks to Barry I can now sit in the house without 4 jumpers on this Christmas
